Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is one of the greatest events in the world. This spectacular festival with street parade, samba music and dance takes place every year around the month of February. People from all over the world flock to Rio de Janeiro city, to enjoy 4 days of fun filled night parades and other street events. Sambadrome is a special street built for to celebrate this carnaval event. Sambadrome street's sides are built with a seating capacity of nearly 65,000 for VIP's and guests to witness the event.
Thousands of people playing the SAMBA music and dancing to the beat on the street is a spectacular event everyone must see. Parade of decorated floats which are organized by "scolas" with each school parade includes more than 4,000 participants dressed in traditional fine looking dresses and to the music of more than 300 percussionists. Each group is given 90 minutes of parade time from on end to the other while judges will select the best one and resent them with the cash price. The participants in the event include dancing and singing children, beautiful dancing women along with muscular young men dancing to the samba music all night. In the 2010 carnaval parade Viradouro samba school gave the lead performer role to Julia Lira, a 7 year old little girl.
The event takes place each year just before "Lent" that is seven Sundays before the Easter Sunday. As this is not a fixed one, so from March 22nd to April 25th, the Carnival dates also vary. In this period the roads, squares and night clubs are filled with joyous people and music. Every corner a you can see a music band or group playing and people dancing. Drinks and food are served on the road side restaurants and joints. While big hotels, restaurants clubs too offer their own carnival related programs. The carnival is televised all over the Brazil live.
Rio de Janeiro city not only offers the carnival but also there are many other attractions all around the year. The Copacabana beach with silver sand is stretched to more than 4 km. This beach offers many kind of sports activities along with bright sunlight. If you don't like any activities, you can sit and relax under a beach umbrella with a cool coconut or your favorite hot drink in the beach side restaurants. On Sundays the busy road along the beach will be closed for traffic and opened only for pedestrians till the night Further interesting things there in Rio are Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor') atop Corcovado mountain, and Maracana stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.
You can reach Rio for carnival by standard flights, through travel agents or by booking cruise ships. When you have booked for cruise ships there is no problem for the hotel accommodation. Other wise you must make early booking with any of the available hotels in Rio de Janeiro city for the event.
Rio Carnival 2012 starts on February 17th until February 21st.
The festival wil last till Saturday 25th of February 2012.
